Panamorph’s VR Headset Display Technologies

Besides our anamorphic lens business, Panamorph has been developing a new Projection BackLighting (PBL) technology for next generation virtual reality headsets to deliver much greater contrast using much less power. All of today’s popular VR headsets flood the user’s eye area with light so that over 90% of that light misses the eye pupil. Much of that wasted light scatters back into the lens as the leading cause of visual contrast loss in VR headsets. Projection BackLighting replaces the conventional backlight by projecting the light from each location in an array of light sources, through the full LCD display panel, and then to a corresponding unique location in the headset display exit pupil. As eye tracking determines which light sources correspond to the current eye pupil location, the remaining 90% of the light sources that would miss the eye pupil are turned off, significantly increasing visual contrast while cutting power requirements to under 10% of today’s headset display lighting requirements, possibly eliminating cooling fans altogether.
